The Allure of Soap Opera Shows: A Nostalgic Look Back

For many of us, our love affair with soap opera shows began during a pivotal moment in our childhood. For me, that moment was when my family got our first VCR in 1979. As an eighth grader at the time, I was immediately hooked on watching my mother's favorite 'stories' after school. And so, my daily habit of watching soap operas was born.

When she went back to work in the late 1970s, she tasked me with watching her shows and reporting on what happened afterwards. It was a job I took very seriously, devouring every episode of The Edge of Night, The Guiding Light, As the World Turns, Search for Tomorrow, Another World, and Texas (a daytime knock-off of Dallas) that aired.

Yes, you read that right - six soap operas! In 1982, when many kids my age were busy playing outside or watching Saturday morning cartoons, I was cozied up on the couch, immersed in the world of Luke and Laura, Victor Newman, and the rest. My friends would often look at me in disbelief when I told them about my daily soap opera marathon, but I couldn't get enough.

There's something undeniably addictive about the combination of drama, romance, and intrigue that soap operas offer. Perhaps it's the over-the-top plot twists, the melodramatic storylines, or the familiar faces that appear in each episode. Whatever the reason, for me, soap opera shows were a guilty pleasure that I couldn't resist.
